Hi Guys,

October is just heading to its middle and autumn is starting here in middle Europe now. I would like to share with you one more tip for guitar improvisation and how to effectively approach to your learning. There is a lot of guitarist that spend many hours a day by playing the guitar and practicing. I don’t say that this is necessarily bad idea, but on the other way, let talk about efficiency a little bit.

Sometimes you don’t need to work on your weak sides too much, most of the the the most effective way is to develop your strong sides and focus on them!

Guitar Improvisation tip of the day

One of the best things you can do when you are in the process of learning, how to improvise onguitar is actually play along with your favourite song and CDs!

Why is this so efficient and important?

You can learn several things from this process. Most important is probably the fact, that you will get more feeling about the type of music you are improvising in. You should always try to thing about the music style you actually improvise in and try to respect the rules of that music. It makes no sense to try put solo across the main voice of the songs, but you can still make nice licks or riffs that will fits to the band and add more value to the song. For solo improvisation, you can wait for some bridge for example.

Good luck and have fun!

Guitar improvisation is a skill that can be learned, it is just a matter of information, resources and practice! It is definitely a skill you have to develop first and it takes some time. This site is here to give you some useful tip and tricks for guitar improvisation and its technique! These tips are unique and are based on my personal experience, so hope you will enjoy them!

10 fast and easy steps to improve your guitar improvisation skills

Tip No. 1 – Keep it simple!
Golden rule number one! If you just started to improvise on guitar, try to keep it simple. The less notes you create at the beginning with more thoughts in your mind the more and quicker you will learn how to improvise.

Tip No. 2 – Always think about melody
Melody is a key to good improvisation skills. Of course you can shred as much as you can, but every good improvisation is built up on strong basis of nice piece of melody that can be later on surrounded by more complicated piece of your guitar skills.

Tip No. 3 – Try to use just one string or two at the beginning
This can sound a little bit weird but try it! Improvise just on one string, moving only up and down. Think about each next tone, should you have move just semi-tone or full tone to get the right mood and to fit to your background music?

Tip No. 4 – Be familiar with pentatonic scales!
Pentatonic scales can be foundation of any improvisation skills and are able to provide you with basic orientation on fret board. Get Familiar with them, they are easy and very useful!

Tip No. 5 – Think ahead
Think about your next tone, really do this. There is no need to move fast, it is also absolutely ok if you repeat several tones you just invented again to gain some time to think about where to move further.

Tip No. 6 – Does your improvisation fit to the gender of the music of your backing track?
This is very important thing. I heard so many guys shredding like metal gods and improvising in this style to very slow a romantic piece of song or backtrack. This just doesn’t work. Be musician, not only guitarist. Think about style of music you produce and what role the guitar is taking there.

Tip No. 7 – Develop universal scales progression
Try to develop your own universal and unique licks and scale progression! I mean, try to develop progression that are not dependent on using open strings so that you are easily able to transpose them and use in any other scales.

Tip No. 8 – You don’t have to shred all the time!
Shredding can be great sometimes and in some kind of gender, but there are some limitations for this. You can just shred all the time, your listeners will get lost or even worse, bored by your playing. What usually happens is that the guitarist that lacks invention and melodic feeling tries to substitute these essential skills by shredding. This is not the right way. Try to be different.

Tip No. 9 – It is all about practice!
Practice, practice and once again practice. You simply can’t be great in improvisation without actually practicing it.

Tip No. 10 – Have fun!
You have to enjoy it, it is all about. Have fun!
