10 fast and easy steps to improve your guitar improvisation skills
Tip No. 1 – Keep it simple!
Golden rule number one! If you just started to improvise on guitar, try to keep it simple. The less notes you create at the beginning with more thoughts in your mind the more and quicker you will learn how to improvise.
Tip No. 2 – Always think about melody
Melody is a key to good improvisation skills. Of course you can shred as much as you can, but every good improvisation is built up on strong basis of nice piece of melody that can be later on surrounded by more complicated piece of your guitar skills.
Tip No. 3 – Try to use just one string or two at the beginning
This can sound a little bit weird but try it! Improvise just on one string, moving only up and down. Think about each next tone, should you have move just semi-tone or full tone to get the right mood and to fit to your background music?
Tip No. 4 – Be familiar with pentatonic scales!
Pentatonic scales can be foundation of any improvisation skills and are able to provide you with basic orientation on fret board. Get Familiar with them, they are easy and very useful!
Tip No. 5 – Think ahead
Think about your next tone, really do this. There is no need to move fast, it is also absolutely ok if you repeat several tones you just invented again to gain some time to think about where to move further.
Tip No. 6 – Does your improvisation fit to the gender of the music of your backing track?
This is very important thing. I heard so many guys shredding like metal gods and improvising in this style to very slow a romantic piece of song or backtrack. This just doesn’t work. Be musician, not only guitarist. Think about style of music you produce and what role the guitar is taking there.
Tip No. 7 – Develop universal scales progression
Try to develop your own universal and unique licks and scale progression! I mean, try to develop progression that are not dependent on using open strings so that you are easily able to transpose them and use in any other scales.
Tip No. 8 – You don’t have to shred all the time!
Shredding can be great sometimes and in some kind of gender, but there are some limitations for this. You can just shred all the time, your listeners will get lost or even worse, bored by your playing. What usually happens is that the guitarist that lacks invention and melodic feeling tries to substitute these essential skills by shredding. This is not the right way. Try to be different.
Tip No. 9 – It is all about practice!
Practice, practice and once again practice. You simply can’t be great in improvisation without actually practicing it.
Tip No. 10 – Have fun!
You have to enjoy it, it is all about. Have fun!
Let’s have a look on one great guitar improvisation!
